Winter Riding Guidelines and Cold Weather Policy

Notes & Updates

Hi everyone -

Well the cold weather looks like it is upon us.  We have had a lot of questions regarding winter riding and what the guidelines are as far as lessons go.  We teach year round.

We will only cancel lessons if we know the following things listed below:

  1. The temperature is to remain under 20 degrees.  This becomes unhealthy for the horses to exert themselves and uncomfortable for us all.
  2. The roads are treacherous surrounding us.  We do run into issues after a bad ice storm where the roads become dangerous.  If this happens, we will call everyone at least an hour and a half prior to the lesson day starting and inform you.

Good rules of thumb for you and/or your children:

  • Even though it is chilly, you will still get warm as riding is a physical activity.  Please make sure to wear layers so that you or your child are able to remove layers while still be bundled well enough to stay warm.
  • Please make sure to wear gloves.  We do recommend that you get winter gloves that are made for horseback riding.  Please see us and we can help guide you to websites or stores that carry them.
  • You or your child will still have to wear a helmet and CANNOT wear a hat underneath it as it jeapordizes the effectiveness of the helmet in case of a fall.  As such, there are some really nice ear muffs that you can buy now that will fit around the back of the head and over the ears.  You can get them at any major department store and they seem to work very well.

Thanks and as always, please make sure to reach out if you have any questions.
